Frequently Asked Questions

How does Raise My Head help trafficked women?

Raise My Head Foundation provides a safe residential program for women over the age of eighteen to recover from the physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds inflicted by sex trafficking. Through our collaboration with the many other service providers in Wichita, we offer comprehensive, wrap-around services including medical and dental treatment, therapies in abuse recovery, anger management, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additional services, including GED completion and training in life skills such as cooking, sewing, baking, and money management, are offered by outside programs or volunteers of Raise My Head.

What impact does a life of trafficking have on a woman?

Trafficking has a harrowing effect on the women and girls ensnared in its web. Beyond the physical abuse, trafficked women suffer extreme emotional stress, including shame, grief, fear, distrust, and suicidal thoughts. Victims frequently experience post-traumatic stress disorder, acute anxiety, depression, and insomnia. To cope with the crippling pain, many women become addicted to alcohol and drugs.

What services does a woman need to break free and heal from being trafficked?

Survivors of sex trafficking require comprehensive, long-term trauma treatment that includes many of the following:

  • Shelter
  • Nutrition
  • Medical treatment
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Counseling
  • Addiction treatment
  • Education and life skills training
  • Legal services
  • Assistance obtaining compensation and government assistance

The damage is deep, and list is daunting. But we believe that love provides the strength and perseverance necessary to overcome any obstacle.

How is Raise My Head funded?

Raise My Head Foundation does not receive state or federal funding. Instead, our program is funded through individuals and corporations with a passion for our mission, as well as through annual fund-raising activities. Our collaboration with a professional grant writer ensures that grant writing will be a continual endeavor. Our new online storefront will provide both funding and employment opportunities for the women we serve.

How many women can you help at one time?

Currently, we are capable of hosting up to eight women—two women per bedroom—for up to two years. As we add homes, we will be able to care for more residents.

What are you looking for in a potential residence?

To best meet the needs of the women of Raise My Head, a home would have four bedrooms and four bathrooms with a large communal living area and kitchen. This home needs to be on a bus route in a neighborhood that will welcome and support our initiative.

What if a home needs renovations or repairs?

We are blessed with many professionals who have volunteered their services for renovations, repairs, decorating, painting, and landscaping the homes of Raise My Head Foundation.

Can Raise My Head Foundation provide outreach services to individuals who are not living at the residence?

Unfortunately, we cannot provide services to women who are not residents in our community at this time.

What are the Foundation’s current short term and long term goals?

For the short term, our most pressing goals are building awareness and support through volunteer development and fundraising activities. We’re also constantly seeking ways to develop and tailor our programs to best serve our residents and help them heal.

Our long term goals include developing an online storefront to help the women of Raise My Head build their resume with the ultimate goal of entry level employment.
